Joseph Wall [w.9.1.5]

Joseph Wall was the fifth child of William Wall & Mary Ball born August 15th 1878 at Lea Brook, Tipton, Staffs.

In 1881 Joseph & his parents & brothers & sisters were living at 72 Lea Brook Rd, Tipton.

Joseph was still living at home at Lea Brook Rd in 1891 with 2 sisters & 2 brothers & his mother, who had remarried after the death of Joseph’s father.  His step-father, Joseph Groves, was a boatman.  Young Joseph was working as an errand boy at the port.

Joseph married Eliza Elizabeth Smith in 1900 at St James, Wednesbury.  Eliza was born October 30th, 1880 at 28 Meeting St, the daughter of Elizabeth & Alfred Smith, a puddler & christened on November 23rd, 1880 at St James, Wednesbury.

In 1901 Joseph & Elizabeth were living at 33 Cross St, Wednesbury & Joseph was a painter.

By 1911Joseph & Elizabeth had moved to 6 Allcock St, Ocker Hill, Tipton & Joseph was now described as a painter connected with boat canal navigation.  They had 3 children at home – William (9), Lily (3) & Joseph Thomas (4 months).  It was noted on the census that 1 additonal child had died.

In May 1915 Joseph & Eliza emigrated from Liverpool on the SS Philadelphia, their destination being New York, USA.  With them were son William & daughter Lily.  Joseph’s occupation was a painter.

The 1920 US census shows that Joseph & family came to live in Madison, Wisconsin, like Joseph’s brother, Thomas.  Joseph was working as a painter in an industrial plant, & son William was a book keeper in an industrial plant.  Daught Lily was still living with them at home.

In 1922 Joseph became a US citizen & gave his address at that time as 23 N. Ingersoll St, Madison. 

The family were still living in Madison in 1930 with the same occupations.  Daughter Lily was now a stenographer in a lawyer’s office.

By 1940 son William had left home and Joseph & Eliza were still living in Madison.  Joseph was still a painter at the University of Wisconsin, & daughter Lily was again a stenographer with Scanlon Morris.  Son William & his wife Lena were also living in Madison in 1940 & William was an accountant & Lena was a clerk at the motor vehicle department.

Joseph died on December 12th, 1952 & was buried at Roselawn Memorial Park, Menona, Madison.

Eliza died on August 27th, 1964 & was buried at Roselawn Memorial Park, Menona, Madison.

Daughter Lily died in 1979 & was known as Lily Wall Newton.
